Goods: Men’s and women’s gently used apparel, shoes and accessories. Designers: Marc Jacobs, Diesel, Express, Nine West, etc.—the stores stock all types of brands, as long as they’re contemporary and in good shape. Owners: Gerald Block and Chip Gerken brought their small Berkeley, California chain to Chicago about four years ago. Vibe: Boutique-like. Of all the exchange stores in the area, Crossroads is the one that best manages to seem like a store, not a rundown consignment shop. Price Range: Inexpensive. As Wicker Park manager Adina Welch points out, you can score a pair of $200 jeans for $50 or less. The Look: Stylish. Employees are trained on current trends and buying techniques, so the store is stocked with all the latest goods. Shopper’s Perks: The consignment program. Simply bring in your gently used clothes for cash or store credit.
