Emilie Zenor was just coming from lunch with her brother in Wicker Park.
Where did you get this gorgeous headdress?
I made this headdress! I buy silk flowers from the dollar store and hot glue them to headbands.
What else besides flowers do you use to accessorize your hair?
Bows, barrettes, glitter, bird clips, braids. Anything I can fit really.
What kind of pink do you dye your hair with? What’s the technique you use?
I use pravana magenta and usually another more bubblegum pink dye to mix with (special-effects cupcake pink or atomic pink is good). I put it on near the roots then comb it down with conditioner mixed with dye for an “ombré” look. I do it myself; I’m a hair stylist at Strange Beauty Show and Chop Shop.
Why pink?
I live for pink, it’s such a wonderful color. Whenever I see pink, I’m happy. Why not feel happy every time I look at my hair? For me, pink hair makes me feel beautiful. I guess in a sense it’s my way of rejecting society’s beauty ideals and creating my own.
How would you define your style?
Part American Ganguro, part gypsy space drag queen, part fairytale punk. When I get dressed I think about what Marie Antoinette would wear if she was thirteen and lived in Harajuku during the nineties.
